Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, has expressed displeasure over reports that the Rivers State Correctional Centre has the highest number of inmates in the West Africa sub region and blamed the police for the development. Amadi spoke at Port Harcourt Correctional Centre, yesterday.
The CJ ordered the release of 22 inmates, who had served nine years and above without any record of their case file in DPP or the matter going on in court.
Meanwhile, 3,385 inmates are currently serving at the Port Harcourt correctional facility designed to house over 1,500 suspects. Amadi blamed men and officers of Nigeria Police for the congestion, accusing them of not carrying out proper investigations before charging inmates to court.
Amadi urged the judiciary, Correctional Centres, Nigerian Police and Department of Public Prosecution to put in their best to ensure decongestion of the facility.
He advised released inmates to come better citizens, saying that the judiciary would release more inmates before the Christmas celebration. November 23, 2022
